Kickstarter Roadmap
We’ve completed our working prototype. Our web portal is in active development. The AI recognition model continues to improve with more training. We're making final adjustments to the tray mechanics, card movement, speed, card handling and we're actively working on the electronic components including PCB and software.
Our design partners have solid relationships forged over 30+ years of product development and manufacturing expertise. As upgrades are underway, we'll vet and pick a manufacturing partner for injection molding the CardMill units.
When we launched CardMill, our first prototype was designed for small-batch 3D printing. Thanks to the overwhelming success of our Kickstarter campaign — over 5,000 units backed! — the project naturally evolved to meet production-scale needs. We’ve transitioned from 3D printing to full-scale injection molding, the industry standard for durable, consistent, and professional-grade hardware.
This shift is a normal and necessary step as hardware products move from prototype to production, ensuring every unit meets the quality and reliability you expect. Because of this expanded process, delivery will extend beyond our original December 2025 estimate. We’ll share an updated timeline as soon as our new engineering team finalizes the production schedule.

How it all started
People ask me, "Why build the CardMill?" Simple—because nothing like it exists for the everyday trading card collector. As a longtime Magic: The Gathering player and trader, I’ve spent countless hours manually entering cards into online tools just to track my collection, organize trades, and build decks. The process is tedious, and existing high-end scanners are expensive. As a parent, husband, and tech professional, I needed a better solution—so I built one. What started as a DIY project with Raspberry Pi and Lego soon evolved into something bigger: an affordable, efficient way for collectors to inventory their cards without the hassle.
CardMill is designed for collectors who want to catalog their collections quickly, without damaging cards or breaking the bank. Imagine always knowing exactly what’s in your collection—no more digging through boxes or realizing too late that a card is in another deck. We’re not here to replace online tracking tools; we’re here to make them easier to use by streamlining the inventory process. Whether you're trading, selling, or just organizing, CardMill gives you full visibility into your collection—so you can focus on playing, not searching.
And so, CardMill was born. CardMill has evolved from concept to working prototype in over 2 years — ready to change how collectors organize their cards.

No! Unlike the competition that charges a per scan fee, or a recurring monthly fee to use the device, CardMill charges only one fee: the machine. Kickstarter backers who pledge for a CardMill unit will also enjoy a lifetime of updates and no recurring fees, as a way of saying Thank You for your support.

We've taken a lot of care to ensure the safety of cards processed through CardMill. We use a non-abrasive rubber to move the card from the hopper to the chamber. Then, a conveyor system glides the card into position for identification. After that, gravity will then gently place the card into the discharge tray. The tray itself is lined with a soft felt to protect the card when it's placed into position. Our goal from day 1 of CardMill has always been the protection of cards. And with a lot of tweaking, we've been able to achieve this.
-
No, not at this time. We're starting with distribution to the USA only for day 1. We hope to expand to other markets soon. Let us know below where you're at, and we'll let you know when we come to you.
-
The CardMill hopper can hold 300 cards. Enough for an entire box of your favorite trading card game. And with the optional hopper extension add-on, you can extend your processing to 800 cards.
-
Yes. The CardMill will need a constant internet connection, either via WiFi or a direct connection, to process your inventory.
-
CardMill can handle perfect-fit sleeves, but not regular sleeves at this time.
-
CardMill can sort alphabetically (by first letter), by set, color, type, rarity and price.
-
Currently, the prototype takes about 1 hour to complete the full 300 card hopper. We are planning on making changes to movement of the sled and we expect the time to cut down in half. So, we're anticipating about 30 minutes for the full sort.
-
Yes. Once you've scanned your cards in, you can then filter through your collection, including when it was scanned in. Then, you can export into a CSV for import into tools like TCGPlayer.com, Moxfield, Deckbox, Archidekt, etc.
